Swahili Pilau

Pilau is a Swahili traditional dish of a spiced rice and beef or mutton or chicken combo
Ready In:

  • 3 cups of rice
  • 3/4 cubed beef/mutton/chicken
  • 2 onions chopped
  • 2 tbsp crushed ginger
  • 2 tbsp Cinnamon powder
  • Cooking oil
  • 1 tbsp crushed ginger
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1tbs cumin seeds
  • 1tbs pure ground pilau masala
  • 200ml Soy sauce (to darken)
  1. Boil the meat until well cooked and tender
  2. In the cooking pot add the oil and the finely chopped onions and fry till well cooked
  3. Add the crushed garlic and ginger and stir till cooked(keep stirring to avoid sticking)
  4. Add the boiled beef and cook till you achieve a delicious brown
  5. Add Cinnamon, black pepper, cumin seeds, soy sauce and salt to taste and let simmer for about 5 minutes
  6. Add 6 cups of hot water and bring to boil
  7. Wash the rice and add to the boiling mixture
  8. Cook under low heat till the the meal is ready
  9. Serve with kachumbari or salad and a ripe banana
